ABSTRACT

Optimization of active sites and stability under irradiation are important targets for sorbent materials that might be used for iodine (I2) storage. Herein, we report the direct observation of I2 binding in a series of Cu(II)-based isostructural metal-organic frameworks, MFM-170, MFM-172, MFM-174, NJU-Bai20, and NJU-Bai21, incorporating various functional groups (-H, -CH3, - NH2, -C≡C-, and -CONH-, respectively). MFM-170 shows a reversible uptake of 3.37 g g-1 and a high packing density of 4.41 g cm-3 for physiosorbed I2. The incorporation of -NH2 and -C≡C- moieties in MFM-174 and NJU-Bai20, respectively, enhances the binding of I2, affording uptakes of up to 3.91 g g-1. In addition, an exceptional I2 packing density of 4.83 g cm-3 is achieved in MFM-174, comparable to that of solid iodine (4.93 g cm-3). In situ crystallographic studies show the formation of a range of supramolecular and chemical interactions [I···N, I···H2N] and [I···C≡C, I-C═C-I] between -NH2, -C≡C- sites, respectively, and adsorbed I2 molecules. These observations have been confirmed via a combination of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, X-ray photoelectron, and Raman spectroscopies. Importantly, γ-irradiation confirmed the ultraresistance of MFM-170, MFM-174, and NJU-Bai20 suggesting their potential as efficient sorbents for cleanup of radioactive waste.

ABSTRACT

Background: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients carries a poor prognosis, with limited effective therapeutic targets. This study aimed to clarify the clinical significance of guanine nucleotide-binding protein like 3-like (GNL3L) protein expression in ESCC and its role in malignant progression. Methods: GNL3L expression and associated cancer-promoting pathways in ESCC were interrogated via bioinformatics analysis through use of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. Subsequent verification of GNL3L protein expression in ESCC, coupled with clinical data, was conducted through immunohistochemistry and followed by a comprehensive prognostic analysis. We further investigated potential signaling pathways facilitating ESCC progression, employing a combination of bioinformatics analysis and immunohistochemical (IHC) experiments. Results: Bioinformatics analysis unveiled a significant elevation in GNL3L expression, particularly in gastrointestinal tumors and ESCC. Immunohistochemistry confirmed elevated GNL3L expression in ESCC tissues. Regression analysis established a correlation between elevated GNL3L expression and advanced tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage, with high expression associated with poor prognosis in patients with ESCC. Our integrated approach of bioinformatics and IHC analysis indicated a potential role of the signal transducers and activators of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway in ESCC progression. Conclusions: High GNL3L expression significantly contributes to the malignant progression of ESCC. This study further elucidates the mechanisms driving ESCC progression and offers possible insights for more effective diagnosis and treatment strategies.

ABSTRACT

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is essential for RNA metabolism in cells. The YTH domain, conserved in the kingdom of Eukaryotes, acts as an m6A reader that binds m6A-containing RNA. In plants, the YTH domain is involved in plant hormone signaling, stress response regulation, RNA stability, translation, and differentiation. However, little is known about the YTH genes in tea-oil tree, which can produce edible oil with high nutritional value. This study aims to identify and characterize the YTH domains within the tea-oil tree (Camellia chekiangoleosa Hu) genome to predict their potential role in development and stress regulation. In this study, 10 members of the YTH family containing the YTH domain named CchYTH1-10 were identified from C. chekiangoleosa. Through analysis of their physical and chemical properties and prediction of subcellular localization, it is known that most family members are located in the nucleus and may have liquid-liquid phase separation. Analysis of cis-acting elements in the CchYTH promoter region revealed that these genes could be closely related to abiotic stress and hormones. The results of expression profiling show that the CchYTH genes were differentially expressed in different tissues, and their expression levels change under drought stress. Overall, these findings could provide a foundation for future research regarding CchYTHs in C. chekiangoleosa and enrich the world in terms of epigenetic mark m6A in forest trees.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the association between maternal fasting plasma glucose (FPG) trajectories during pregnancy and children's refractive errors at 6 years old. DESIGN: Based on the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort (MABC) in China, a total of 1987 mother-child pairs were included in this study. METHODS: Using the group-based trajectory model, trajectory fitting was performed on fasting blood glucose levels during the first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy. Children's vision was measured at 6 years of age using the standard logarithmic visual acuity E-chart and cycloplegic refraction examination. Logistic regression models and multi-informant generalized estimating equations were used to analyze the association between maternal blood glucose level and 6-year-old children's visual acuity. RESULTS: Children born of mothers with high level FPG trajectory had a higher risk of developing refractive error [OR=1.46 (95% CI 1.08 1.97)], hypermetropia [OR=1.64 (95% CI 1.09, 2.46)] and astigmatism [OR=1.60 (95% CI 1.06, 2.41)] at age six compared to those with low level trajectory. Maternal blood glucose level in the first [ß=-0.012 (95% CI -0.024, -0.001)] and the second [ß=-0.016 (95% CI -0.025, -0.006)] trimesters was associated with 6 year children's distance vision value. CONCLUSIONS: High level of fasting plasma glucose trajectories during pregnancy has been observed to be associated with 6-year-old children's refractive error, hypermetropia and astigmatism. The first and the second trimesters may be critical periods for the effects of maternal blood glucose on children's vision. The long-term effect of maternal glucose metabolism on children's visual development deserves further study.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence showed that acupuncture may improve cognitive function by reducing oxidative stress, key to the pathogenesis in vascular dementia (VaD), but this is yet to be systematically analysed. This study aimed to summarize and evaluate the effect of acupuncture on oxidative stress in animal models of VaD. METHOD: Eight databases including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane library, CNKI, Wan Fang, CBM, and VIP were searched since their establishment until April 2023, for studies that reported the effect of acupuncture on oxidative stress in VaD animal models. Relevant literature was screened, and information was extracted by two reviewers. The primary outcomes were the levels of oxidative stress indicators. The methodological quality was assessed via the SYRCLE Risk of Bias Tool. Statistical analyses were performed using the RevMan and Stata software. RESULTS: In total, 22 studies with 747 animals were included. The methodology of most studies had flaws or uncertainties. The meta-analysis indicated that, overall, acupuncture significantly reduced the expression of pro-oxidants including reactive oxygen species (standardized mean differences [SMDs] = -4.29, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -6.26, -2.31), malondialdehyde (SMD = -2.27, 95% CI: -3.07, -1.47), nitric oxide (SMD = -0.85, 95% CI: -1.50, -0.20), and nitric oxide synthase (SMD = -1.01, 95% CI: -1.69, -0.34) and enhanced the levels of anti-oxidants including super oxide dismutase (SMD = 2.80, 95% CI: 1.98, 3.61), glutathione peroxidase (SMD = 1.32, 95% CI: -0.11, 2.76), and catalase (SMD = 1.31, 95% CI: 0.05, 2.58) in VaD animal models. In subgroup analyses, acupuncture showed significant effects on most variables. Only partial modelling methods and treatment duration could interpret the heterogeneity of some outcomes. CONCLUSION: Acupuncture may inhibit oxidative stress to improve cognitive deficits in animal models of VaD. Nevertheless, the methodological quality is unsatisfactory. More high-quality research with a rigorous design and further experimental researches and clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: This study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023411720).

ABSTRACT

Integrated CO2 capture and utilization (ICCU) via the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction offers a particularly promising route for converting diluted CO2 into CO using renewable H2. Current ICCU-RWGS processes typically involve a gas-gas catalytic reaction whose efficiency is inherently limited by the Le Chatelier principle and side reactions. Here, we show a highly efficient ICCU process based on gas-solid carbonate hydrogenation using K promoted CaO (K-CaO) as a dual functional sorbent and catalyst. Importantly, this material allows ∼100% CO2 capture efficiency during carbonation and bypasses the thermodynamic limitations of conventional gas-phase catalytic processes in hydrogenation of ICCU, achieving >95% CO2-to-CO conversion with ∼100% selectivity. We showed that the excellent functionalities of the K-CaO materials arose from the formation of K2Ca(CO3)2 bicarbonates with septal K2CO3 and CaCO3 layers, which preferentially undergo a direct gas-solid phase carbonates hydrogenation leading to the formation of CO, K2CO3 CaO and H2O. This work highlights the immediate potential of K-CaO as a class of dual-functional material for highly efficient ICCU and provides a new rationale for designing functional materials that could benefit the real-life application of ICCU processes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the dynamic impact of the micropapillary (MIP) component on local recurrence (LR), distant metastasis (DM), and multiple recurrence (MR) of pathological stage IA3 lung adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Between July 2012 and July 2020, a total of 351 patients at two medical institutions were enrolled in this study. Cumulative incidence of curves, dynamic risk curves, and time-dependent multivariate analysis was performed to evaluate the effect of the MIP component on patients. RESULTS: The 5-year cumulative incidence of total recurrence with or without an MIP component was 34.2% and 12.3%, respectively (p = 0.001). In three recurrence patterns, our findings revealed that the 5-year cumulative incidence of LR (p = 0.048) and DM (p = 0.005) was higher in the 'MIP-present' group than in the 'MIP-absent' group. In the dynamic recurrence curve, the risk of the three recurrence patterns was different and varied over time between the two groups, especially in DM. Moreover, the dynamic cumulative event curve showed that after 1, 2, and 3 years of survival, the cumulative incidence of DM in the group with MIP continued to be higher than that in the group without MIP (all p < 0.05). Time-dependent Cox regression analysis indicated that the MIP component continued to be an independent risk factor for the cumulative incidence of DM in patients with 3-year survival. CONCLUSIONS: Of the three recurrence patterns, the MIP component mainly aggravated the risk of DM in patients with pathological stage IA3 lung adenocarcinoma, which persisted for 3 years.

ABSTRACT

Formamides are important feedstocks for the manufacture of many fine chemicals. State-of-the-art synthesis of formamides relies on the use of an excess amount of reagents, giving copious waste and thus poor atom-economy. Here, we report the first example of direct synthesis of N-formamides by coupling two challenging reactions, namely reductive amination of carbonyl compounds, particularly biomass-derived aldehydes and ketones, and fixation of CO2 in the presence of H2 over a metal-organic framework supported ruthenium catalyst, Ru/MFM-300(Cr). Highly selective production of N-formamides has been observed for a wide range of carbonyl compounds. Synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction reveals the presence of strong host-guest binding interactions via hydrogen bonding and parallel-displaced π⋅⋅⋅π interactions between the catalyst and adsorbed substrates facilitating the activation of substrates and promoting selectivity to formamides. The use of multifunctional porous catalysts to integrate CO2 utilisation in the synthesis of formamide products will have a significant impact in the sustainable synthesis of feedstock chemicals.

ABSTRACT

The management of anaerobic digestate is important to realize the value of the waste and enhance the whole system sustainability of anaerobic digestion. In this study, the phosphorus treatment of dirty irrigation water by biochar samples derived from digestate of anaerobic digestion were investigated. The biochars were further activated by steam activation with different duration time and KOH activation with different introducing ratios; the textural properties of biochars were optimized after activation from the aspect of biochar characterization. Notably, AD-N2 demonstrates a remarkable adsorption effect of phosphorus, with an adsorption efficiency of 8.99 mg g-1. Besides the effect of biochar dosage on phosphorus removal, adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic isotherms are studied. According to the adsorption kinetics, the adsorption of phosphorus from dirty water fits the Elovich equation (R2 = 0.95). Furthermore, the thermodynamic isotherm results illustrate the process of phosphorus removal by biochar is endothermic (ΔH0 = 17.93 kJ mol-1) and spontaneous (ΔS = 96.24 J mol-1 K-1). Therefore, this work suggests a promising solution to phosphorus-related environmental challenges in industry and agriculture.

ABSTRACT

Conversion of methane (CH4) to ethylene (C2H4) and/or acetylene (C2H2) enables routes to a wide range of products directly from natural gas. However, high reaction temperatures and pressures are often required to activate and convert CH4 controllably, and separating C2+ products from unreacted CH4 can be challenging. Here, we report the direct conversion of CH4 to C2H4 and C2H2 driven by non-thermal plasma under ambient (25 °C and 1 atm) and flow conditions over a metal-organic framework material, MFM-300(Fe). The selectivity for the formation of C2H4 and C2H2 reaches 96% with a high time yield of 334 µmol gcat-1 h-1. At a conversion of 10%, the selectivity to C2+ hydrocarbons and time yield exceed 98% and 2056 µmol gcat-1 h-1, respectively, representing a new benchmark for conversion of CH4. In situ neutron powder diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopies, coupled with modeling studies, reveal the crucial role of Fe-O(H)-Fe sites in activating CH4 and stabilizing reaction intermediates via the formation of an Fe-O(CH3)-Fe adduct. In addition, a cascade fixed-bed system has been developed to achieve online separation of C2H4 and C2H2 from unreacted CH4 for direct use. Integrating the processes of CH4 activation, conversion, and product separation within one system opens a new avenue for natural gas utility, bridging the gap between fundamental studies and practical applications in this area.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The effects of minimally invasive total mesoesophageal excision (MITME) on the long-term prognosis of locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remain unknown. The objective of this study was to compare the static and dynamic failure patterns of MITME and minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) for locally advanced ESCC. METHODS: We use propensity score matching (PSM) method to analyze the postoperative failure patterns of the two groups. Cumulative event curves were analyzed for cumulative incidence of failure between different groups, and independent prognostic factors were assessed using time-dependent multivariate analyses. The risk of dynamic failure calculated at 12-month intervals was compared between the two groups using the lifetime table. RESULTS: A total of 366 ESCC patients were studied by 1:1 PSM for T stage and TNM stage (MITME group, n = 183; MIE group, n = 183). In the matched cohort, there was significant differences between the MITME and MIE groups in the failure pattern of regional lymph node recurrence (0.5 vs 3.8%, P = 0.032) and non-tumor death (10.9 vs 31.7%, P < 0.001). The cumulative event curve found that the 5-year cumulative failure rate was lower in the MITME group than in the MIE group (3.3 vs 17.1%, P = 0.026) after 5 years of survival. In addition, multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that MIE was an independent poor prognostic factor for a high cumulative failure rate in locally advanced ESCC patients at 5 years after surgery (HR:4.110; 95% CI 1.047-16.135; P = 0.043). The dynamic risk curve showed that the MITME group had a lower risk of failure within 5 years after surgery than the MIE group. CONCLUSION: Considering that MITME can significantly improve the postoperative failure pattern and the benefit lasts for at least 5 years, it is feasible to use MITME as a treatment for locally advanced ESCC.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the presence of a radiographically manifested ground-glass opacity (GGO) component on the prognosis of patients with pathological stage IA3 lung adenocarcinoma. Methods: Patients diagnosed with pathological stage IA3 lung adenocarcinoma who underwent radical surgery at two medical institutions in China between July 2012 and July 2020 were enrolled. The cumulative incidence of recurrence (CIR) and cumulative incidence of death (CID) in patients with and without a GGO component were compared. Risk curves for the recurrence and tumor-related death overtime were analyzed between the two groups according to life table. In order to validate the prognostic value of GGO components, the recurrence-free survival (RFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were estimated. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was performed to evaluate the clinical benefit rate of different models. Results: Among the 352 included patients, the presence of a GGO component was radiographically shown in 166 (47.2%) patients, while 186 (52.8%) displayed solid nodules. Patients exhibiting the absence of a GGO component had higher incidences of total recurrence (17.2% vs. 3.0%, P<0.001), local-regional recurrence (LRR) (5.4% vs. 0.6%, P=0.010), distant metastasis (DM) (8.1% vs. 1.8%, P=0.008), and multiple recurrences (4.3% vs. 0.6%, P=0.028) than the presence-GGO component group. The 5-year CIR and CID were 7.5% and 7.4% in the presence-GGO component group, and 24.5% and 17.0% in the absence-GGO component group, respectively, with statistically significant differences between the two groups (P<0.05). The risk of recurrence in patients with the presence of GGO components showed a single peak at 3 years postoperatively, while patients with the absence of GGO components showed a double peak at 1 and 5 years after surgery, respectively. However, the risk of tumor-related death peaked in both groups at 3 and 6 years postoperatively. Multivariate Cox analysis showed that the presence of a GGO component was a favorable independent risk factor for pathological stage IA3 lung adenocarcinoma patients (P<0.05). Conclusions: Pathological stage IA3 lung adenocarcinoma with or without GGO components are two types of tumors with different invasive abilities. In clinical practice, we should develop different treatment and follow-up strategies.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury behavior (NSSI) is a common mental health threat among adolescents. Poor parent-child relationship (PCR) and problematic mobile phone use (PMPU) are risk factors for NSSI. We aimed to explore the impact of PCR quality, PMPU, and their interaction effects on NSSI among adolescents in China, as well as the sex difference. METHOD: A survey was conducted among school students in 4 provinces in China between 2017 and 2018. The study included 14,500 valid participants. The students' general demographic characteristics was collected, and further data on PCR quality, PMPU, and NSSI were obtained through self-rated questionnaire. Chi-square test, binomial logistic regression models, and the Andersson Excel were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The 12-month prevalence of NSSI was 27.3%. Lower PCR quality and PMPU were significantly associated with NSSI, respectively. The low PCR + yes PMPU group had the greatest association with NSSI, followed by the high PCR + yes PMPU group, low PCR + no PMPU group. Moreover, in low father-child relationship + yes PMPU group, females had a higher risk of NSSI than males; in high mother-child relationship + yes PMPU group, females had a higher risk of NSSI than males. Additive interaction analysis indicated that mother-child relationship quality and PMPU were associated with increased risks of NSSI, in the subgroup of males. CONCLUSIONS: The findings underline the importance of simultaneously studying the quality of PCR and PMPU for a comprehensive understanding of NSSI behavior, and especially highlights the significance of maternal relationship quality.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The study investigated the synergistic effect of the micropapillary (MIP) component and consolidation-to-tumor ratio (CTR) on the recurrence and survival of patients with pathologic stage IA3 lung adenocarcinoma. METHODS: We enrolled 419 patients confirmed pathological stage IA3 adenocarcinoma from four institutions. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to examine the value of the MIP component and CTR on relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). The cumulative recurrence between different stages was analyzed by using cumulative event curves. RESULTS: RFS (P < 0.0001) and OS (P = 0.008) in the presence of the MIP group were significantly lower than those in the absence of the MIP group, and CTR > 5 only reduced RFS (P = 0.0004), but not OS (P = 0.063), in the patients. In addition, the prognosis of patients with both the MIP component and CTR > 5 was worse than that of those without the MIP component or CTR ≤ 5. Therefore, we established new subtypes of the stage IA3: IA3a, IA3b, and IA3c. RFS and OS for IA3c staging were significantly lower than those for IA3a and IA3b. For IA3c, the cumulative incidence of local recurrence (P < 0.001) and that of distant metastasis (P = 0.004) were significantly higher than those for IA3a and IA3b. CONCLUSIONS: The MIP component combined with CTR > 0.5 can effectively predict the prognosis of patients with pathological stage IA3 lung adenocarcinoma and may offer more detailed recurrence and survival information according to the established subtype stage of IA3.

ABSTRACT

Achieving carbon neutrality is one of the most important tasks to meet the environmental challenges due to excessive CO2 emissions. Integrated CO2 capture and utilization (ICCU) represents an effective process for direct utilization of CO2-contained exhaust gas (e.g. flue gas), in which converting the captured CO2 into CO via reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction is a promising route. The dual functional materials (DFMs), containing CO2 adsorbents and catalysts, are widely applied to achieve ICCU. The conventional active metals (Ni, Fe, etc.)-based DFMs and non-transition metal DFMs (e.g. CaO) are restricted by low CO selectivity, catalytic efficiency or CO generation in the CO2 capture step. To address the above obstructs in the application of DFMs, the metal oxides-based DFMs, MOx-CaO (M = Al, Ce, Ti or Zr), are synthesized and evaluated. The CeO2-CaO outperformed the other metal oxides-based DFMs and possessed significantly improved catalytic performance. It is found that 33% CeO2-CaO DFM displayed approximately 49% CO2 conversion and approximately 100% CO selectivity in integrated CO2 capture and reverse water-gas shift reaction (ICCU-RWGS) at 650°C, while CaO-alone only achieved approximately 20% CO2 conversion at the same condition. The surface basicity of CeO2 is revealed to contribute to the improved catalytic performance by enhancing CO2 chemisorption and activation in the hydrogenation step. Furthermore, CeO2-CaO material possessed excellent cycle stability in 20 cycles ICCU-RWGS, achieving a sustainable and high-efficient performance in CO2 conversion and CO selectivity.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep-wake schedules and self-reported myopia in the pediatric population. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study in 2019, school-aged children and adolescents in the Baoan District of Shenzhen City were sampled using a stratified cluster sampling approach. Sleep-wake schedules of children were determined by a self-administered questionnaire. The age that participants first reported using myopia correction glasses or contact lenses was used to identify those with myopia. Pearson χ2 test was used to examine differences in myopia prevalence among participants with different characteristics. Multivariate logistic regression, adjusted for potential confounding variables, was applied to examine the relationship between sleep-wake schedule and risk of self-reported myopia, and a stratification analysis by school grade was also performed. RESULTS: A total of 30,188 students were recruited. In this study, the overall prevalence of myopia was 49.8%, with prevalence rates of 25.6%, 62.4%, and 75.7% for primary, junior high, and senior high school students, respectively. Students with irregular sleep-wake times reported a higher prevalence of myopia than those with regular sleep-wake times. Nighttime sleep duration of < 7 hours/day (h/d) (OR = 1.27, 95%CI: 1.17-1.38), no daytime nap (OR = 1.10, 95%CI: 1.03-1.18), irregular weekday bedtime (OR = 1.11, 95%CI: 1.05-1.17), irregular weekday wake time (OR = 1.21, 95%CI: 1.12-1.30), weekend bedtime delayed > = 1 h/d (OR = 1.20, 95%CI: 1.11-1.29, P < 0.001), weekend wake time delayed > = 1 h/d (OR = 1.11, 95%CI: 1.03-1.19), irregular sleep-wake time on weekdays (OR = 1.13, 95%CI: 1.07-1.19), and social jetlag > = 1 h (OR = 1.08, 95%CI: 1.03-1.14) were likely to be associated with increased risks of self-reported myopia after adjusting age, sex, grade, parental education level, family income, parental myopia, academic record, and academic workload. When stratified by school grade, we observed that nighttime sleep duration < 7 h/d, no daytime naps, and irregular sleep-wake time on weekdays were significantly associated with self-reported myopia in primary school students. CONCLUSION: Insufficient sleep and irregular sleep-wake schedules can increase the risk of self-reported myopia in children and adolescents.

ABSTRACT

The reactions of H2, CO2, and CO gas mixtures on the surface of Cu at 200 °C, relevant for industrial methanol synthesis, are investigated using a combination of ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) and atmospheric-pressure near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (AtmP-NEXAFS) spectroscopy bridging pressures from 0.1 mbar to 1 bar. We find that the order of gas dosing can critically affect the catalyst chemical state, with the Cu catalyst maintained in a metallic state when H2 is introduced prior to the addition of CO2. Only on increasing the CO2 partial pressure is CuO formation observed that coexists with metallic Cu. When only CO2 is present, the surface oxidizes to Cu2O and CuO, and the subsequent addition of H2 partially reduces the surface to Cu2O without recovering metallic Cu, consistent with a high kinetic barrier to H2 dissociation on Cu2O. The addition of CO to the gas mixture is found to play a key role in removing adsorbed oxygen that otherwise passivates the Cu surface, making metallic Cu surface sites available for CO2 activation and subsequent conversion to CH3OH. These findings are corroborated by mass spectrometry measurements, which show increased H2O formation when H2 is dosed before rather than after CO2. The importance of maintaining metallic Cu sites during the methanol synthesis reaction is thereby highlighted, with the inclusion of CO in the gas feed helping to achieve this even in the absence of ZnO as the catalyst support.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Adolescents exposed to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are at increased risk for health-compromising behaviors. However, few studies have investigated how ACEs correlate with patterns of health risk behaviors (HRBs) during adolescence, a crucial developmental period. The aim was to extend the current knowledge about the relationship between ACEs and HRB patterns among adolescents, and to explore gender differences. METHODS: A multi-centered population-based survey was conducted in 24 middle schools in three provinces across China between 2020 and 2021. A total of 16,853 adolescents effectively completed anonymous questionnaires covering exposure to eight ACE categories and 11 HRBs. Clusters were identified using latent class analysis. Logistic regression models were utilized to test the association between them. RESULTS: There were four classes of HRB patterns: "Low all" (58.35%), "Unhealthy lifestyle" (18.23%), "Self-harm" (18.42%), and "High all" (5.0%). There were significant differences between HRB patterns in terms of the different numbers and types of ACEs in three logistic regression models. Specifically, compared to "Low all," different types of ACEs were positively associated with the three other HRB patterns, and there were significant trends toward increase in the three latent classes of HRBs with higher ACEs. In general, females with ACEs had a higher risk of "High all" except sexual abuse than males. CONCLUSION: Our study comprehensively considers the association between ACEs and aggregation categories of HRBs. The results support efforts to improve clinical healthcare, and future work may explore protective factors based on individual, family, and peer education to mitigate the negative trajectory of ACEs.
